How Deep Is the Ocean?

Dive from the surface to the deepest trench.

Loading the fun…

What is this experiment about?

The ocean is far deeper than it looks from the beach. Drag the depth slider downward to travel from sunny shallow water all the way to the Mariana Trench, the deepest place on Earth.

Questions kids ask

How deep is the deepest part of the ocean?
The Mariana Trench reaches about 11,000 metres deep — if you dropped Mount Everest in, its peak would still be underwater.
Can sunlight reach the bottom of the ocean?
No. Sunlight fades out by about 1,000 metres down, so most of the ocean is in total darkness.
What lives in the deepest parts of the ocean?
Strange creatures like anglerfish and giant tube worms survive there, often making their own light.
